Jakarta –
A Palestinian boy suffered a ‘severe’ head after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle. The life of a 12-year-old boy named Suleiman Hassan was saved after doctors in Israel managed to ‘reattach’ his head.
Quoted from the Times of Israel, doctors said Suleiman’s condition was bilateral atlanto occipital joint dislocation or called internal or orthopedic decapitation, which is a rare injury that occurs when a sudden impact causes the ligaments and muscles that support the head and connect it to the spine to be damaged.
This condition is very rare in adults and even more so in children.
“We are fighting to save this child’s life,” said Ohad Einav, an orthopedic specialist involved in Suleiman’s surgery.
Dr. Einav operated on Suleiman with a doctor named Ziv Asa assisted by an operating team and an intensive care team. According to him, the surgical procedure for ‘connecting’ Suleiman’s head was very difficult and took hours.
Not only that, the doctor also had to use new plates and fixations in the damaged area. Meanwhile, fixation is used to keep the patient’s head and neck stable.
“The procedure itself is very complicated and takes several hours. While in the operating room, we apply new plates and fixation on the damaged area,” said Dr. Einav.
Suleiman’s injury was treated in early June, but the Jerusalem hospital has waited a month to announce the results.
After surgery and treatment, Suleiman underwent rehabilitation to help them regain movement in their necks. She has also been discharged with a cervical splint, and doctors will continue to monitor her recovery.
He had no neurological deficits or sensory or motor dysfunction and was able to walk unaided.
