Hundreds of Israeli demonstrators and American supporters crossed the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on Sunday to protest the reform of the government’s judicial system.
The demonstrators crossed the bridge, the emblem of the city, displaying Israeli flags and chanting “Democracy”.
The protest was organized by the Israeli activist group UnXeptable. Many demonstrators wore T-shirts depicting Israeli protest groups.
Organizers said more than 1,000 people marched in support of Israeli protesters, including last week’s march to Jerusalem. Manhattan Borough Chief Mark Levine, one of the city’s top Jewish lawmakers, was among the protesters.
“We see our families and friends marching in the heat, fighting for Israeli democracy and for our common future, and we want to send them strength from here,” said Shany Granot-Lubaton, one of Israel’s top protest organizers in New York. “We will not let this corrupt government tear apart the people of Israel and the Diaspora. Israel will not be a dictatorship. »
Activists in New York and other cities across the United States and elsewhere have held regular rallies since the government announced its judicial reform agenda in January. A few weeks ago, they had organized a demonstration in front of the Statue of Liberty, and other events took place in front of the Israeli consulate and during appearances by Israeli ministers in the region.
