Tehran He promised this Monday a harsh response against Israel for bombing and destroying his consulate in Damascuswhere the Iranian ambassador resided, who was unharmed, but which caused at least eight deaths, including an important brigadier general of the Revolutionary Guard.

In one of the hardest blows to Iran in recent years in SyriaIran’s ambassador to this country, Hossein Akbarisaid on Iranian state television from Damascus that “the Zionist regime (Israel) acts against international laws, for which it will receive a harsh response from us”.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran reserves its right to take countermeasures, and will decide on the type of reaction and punishment of the aggressor.”stated, for his part, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Naser Kanani.

The Syrian authorities accused the “Israeli enemy” of launching a bombardment “around 5:00 p.m. today (14:00 GMT)”, from the Golan Heights occupied by Israel against the “Iranian consulate building in Damascus,” according to an unidentified military source, who noted that anti-aircraft defenses shot down “some” of the missiles launched.

Akbari witnessed from the embassy window the attack on the consulate, which he said was carried out with F-35 fighters that fired six missiles at the Iranian facilities.

So far, Israel has not claimed responsibility for this action, as is usual in its attacks against Syrian territory.

Attack against members of the Revolutionary Guard

Today’s bombing points to a selective attack by Israel that has killed several generals of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, although the number varies according to sources, given that the rubble of the destroyed building is still being removed.

On the one hand, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights He said at least eight people died, including Mohamed Reza Zahediidentified as leader of the forces Quds (one of the branches of the Revolutionary Guard) in Syria and the Lebanonas well as two other advisors and five members of the Iranian paramilitary entity.

Sources close to the Iranian embassy told EFE on condition of anonymity that senior Iranian officials in Syria and Lebanon died, such as Zahedi, his assistant identified by Iranian media as General Mohammad Haji Rahimias well as the military attaché of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, among others.

The same sources pointed out that the consulate was the place where the ambassador and his family lived, who also emerged unharmed from the attack.

For his part, Akbari told Syrian state television that “there are between five and seven dead,” but indicated that they cannot give an exact figure “until the rubble is removed.”

This is the bloodiest attack against the Iranian military in Syria so far in 2024, where to date eight people have been killed by Israeli bombings, including two generals of the Revolutionary Guard.

The Observatory has counted thirty Israeli attacks against Syrian territory in 2024.

Last December, in an attack similar to today’s on the outskirts of Damascus, and also attributed to Israel, an advisor to the Revolutionary Guard died. Seyyed Razi Mousavi.

Iran, Syria’s ally in the civil war

The Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal al-Miqdadconveyed this Monday Syria’s support for Iran after the attack in a call to his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdollahianto whom he said that this bombing is a consequence of Israel’s “miserable failure” in the war against the Palestinian people of the Strip of Gaza and reiterated that the Jewish State “will not be able to influence relations between Iran and Syria.”

Iran has been a key ally of Damascus in the war in Syria, where Tehran has sent soldiers and military advisors, and is a staunch enemy of Israel, a country with which it competes for regional hegemony.

Israeli bombings are usually directed against areas where the Lebanese Shiite group is present Hezbollahan ally of the Syrian Government and which since last October 8 has been engaged in intense crossed attacks with Israel from the south of the Lebanon.

However, Israel has previously attacked targets in Lebanon, often belonging to Iranian or Lebanese militias allied with Damascus that it considers a threat to its security. EFE (I)
