Israel attacks not only women and children in Gaza, but also journalists who try to work under difficult conditions, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today, as reported by BTA Anadolu Agency.
International organizations are responsible for the world’s inability to establish world peace and security and solve problems, Erdogan said in an address to Turkish broadcaster TRT 2023 World Forum in Istanbul.
“The global media cartels are trying to cover up the brutality in Gaza and legitimize the killing of journalists under the pretext of Hamas,” he added, referring to Israel’s attacks on Gaza since October 7, which have claimed more than 17,000 lives, most of them women and children.
“Every day a journalist is killed, but we hear nothing but silence from the institutions that have been preaching freedom of the press for years,” he said.
Praising the Turkish media for accurate reporting from Gaza, which shows the world the real conditions there under deadly siege, Erdogan said: “I would like to congratulate TRT, Anadolu Agency and our other media institutions, which have opened a vital corridor from Gaza to the world.”
More than 70 journalists have been killed in Gaza, Erdogan said, adding: “Where are the world-renowned media? Why don’t they publish headlines about the murdered journalists?’
Erdogan recalled that Israel killed a journalist working for the Anadolu Agency as a freelance cameraman from Gaza, and also that the video camera of a journalist from TRT News (TRT News) was broken while he was covering the events in the Old City of Jerusalem.
Despite attacking journalists, Israel cannot prevent the truth from being revealed, the Turkish president said.
The main goal is to expose the lies and accusations about Gaza and make them known to all of humanity, especially Turkey, Erdogan added.
“For all its barbarism, Israel is also losing its media propaganda war, unable to break the resilience of the people of Gaza,” he said.
“Wherever they are in the world, those working in the media, especially all people of good faith, must be brave, stand up and speak truth and justice openly and sincerely. If Israel’s cruelty cannot be stopped, no one can feel safe anywhere in the world,” Erdogan said, adding: “Because Pandora’s box is open.”
Some Western countries are aware of the crimes committed by Israel and act with a sense of discomfort, Erdogan said.
“Just as (former President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Slobodan) Milosevic was tried and convicted, I believe that (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu and his accomplices will be tried in the same way and ultimately convicted.”
Netanyahu and his supporters are also “terrorists as accomplices to terrorism” and will “undoubtedly” be tried at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, he added.
“It is not the West, which adds fuel to the fire, that pays the price for every lost moment to achieve lasting peace, but unfortunately the innocent,” the Turkish president said.
By ignoring the Palestinian people and especially the oppressed in Gaza, the US and European countries are doing themselves the greatest harm, Erdogan said.
“They do not yet know that they are being subjected to a test that will fundamentally shake the order of security and welfare, and from which the West trembles.”
Erdogan said he found anti-Semitism “inhumane”, adding that anti-Semitism was being fueled by Netanyahu and his associates for “political gain”.
“Turkey is ready to take responsibility to prevent more bloodshed (in Gaza),” Erdogan said, referring to Ankara’s offer to broker peace or serve as a guarantor for the region.
“There are no losers in a just peace,” he added.
“We will not give up proclaiming justice and truth, no matter who may be worried about it,” Erdogan said.
The Turkish president also welcomed and praised UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter for the first time since taking the top post at the organization in 2017, calling on the UN Security Council to act in relation to the war in Gaza.
In a letter dated Wednesday, Guterres said: “I call on the Security Council to apply pressure to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe. I repeat my call for a humanitarian ceasefire. This is urgent.”
More than 75 journalists have been killed and 140 injured in Israeli attacks since October 7.
At least 17,487 Palestinians have been killed and more than 46,480 injured in the relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas since October 7.
The number of Israeli victims of the Hamas attack stands at 1,200, according to official figures.
