Jakarta –
Children are also victims of the brutality of Israeli attacks when the conflict in Gaza with Hamas heats up. At least 3,900 children in Gaza died as a result of this incident.
Israel is known to have bombarded a number of buildings sheltering Gaza residents, including schools, universities, hospitals and refugee camps. Doctors working at the location described their horror when treating patients, especially children.
Doctors at Al Shifa Hospital, the region’s largest, treated children with large parts of their bodies and faces burned, missing limbs and serious injuries. Even pediatric patients have to be operated on without anesthesia.
“Children are coming in with most of their bodies and faces burned, limbs missing. Horrifying injuries, and doctors are running out of anesthetics, not enough post-operative space to treat them. Not enough antibiotics. Not enough dressings,” said Dr Tanya Haj- Hassan, pediatric intensive care specialist from Doctor Without Borders (MSF) to CNN written Monday (6/11/22023).
The United Nations (UN) reports that more than 40 percent of those killed in Gaza were children. About 3,900 died and another 1,250 missing are thought to be buried under bombed buildings.
With little rescue equipment and overcrowded hospitals, the child’s chance of survival is very low.
“The numbers are clearly catastrophic,” said Unicef spokesman Toby Fricker, quoted by The Guardian.
Apart from that, the group of children most at risk are those born during war. It is estimated that there are 50 thousand pregnant women in Gaza and with the closure of 14 hospitals and 45 clinics, they can give birth on the street amidst the rubble.
