Gaza’s Civil Defense said Saturday (21.09.2024) that an Israeli bombardment of a school where displaced people were sheltering in Gaza City killed at least 19 people, in an attack that the Israeli army said was directed against Hamas fighters.
Among the dead were “13 children and six women,” one of them pregnant, said Civil Defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal. “More than 30 people,” including “nine children,” were injured in the bombing of the Al Zaytun C school in Gaza City, in the north of the country, he added.
The school has been hosting thousands of people displaced by the conflict between the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip since October 7, he said.
The Israeli army said in a statement that it had “carried out a targeted strike against terrorists operating inside a Hamas command and control centre in Gaza City,” and specified that the target was “inside” the Al Falah school, adjacent to the Al Zaytun school buildings.
It also said it had taken “measures to mitigate the risk of harming civilians,” particularly through the use of precision weapons.
