Israeli Attack on Refugee Tents in Gaza Leaves 11 Dead and 50 Injured

Gaza

Israel attacked refugee tents located near the Al-Helal Al-Emirati Maternity Hospital, Rafah, Gaza, Palestine. The attack left 11 people dead and 50 injured.

Reported Al Jazeera, Sunday (3/3/2024), Israeli troops carried out an attack on a tent in Rafah housing displaced Palestinians on Saturday (2/3). The attack was carried out using unmanned aircraft or drones.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health said the attack occurred next to the entrance to the Al-Helal Al-Emirati Maternity Hospital in Tal as-Sultan, Rafah City. The head of the paramedic unit at the hospital, Abdel Fattah Abu Marhi, was killed in the attack and a number of children were injured.

Eight bodies have been taken to Kuwait Hospital ‘where the situation is very chaotic’. The small facility was unprepared for the large number of injured arriving there.

“The attack hit a tent, where people were taking shelter, directly, shrapnel went into the hospital where my friends and I were sitting, we survived by a miracle,” an eyewitness told Reuters news agency.

In December, refugees were instructed by Israel to move to the Tal as-Sultan area to avoid bombing and add to the narrative ‘that Rafah is a safe zone’, but this was proven to be false.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the attack ‘outrageous and beyond words’.

“Among those killed were two health workers. Health workers and civilians are not targets, and must be protected at all times. We urge Israel to carry out a ceasefire,” he said in a post on X.

At least 30,320 Palestinians have been killed and 71,533 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. Israel claimed the war was a response to Hamas attacks which killed 1,200 people in Israel.
