Israeli Attack on Nasser Hospital in Gaza Renders Facility Inoperable and Seizes Staff

Nasser Hospital, the second largest hospital in Gaza, was completely shut down after Israel launched a heavy attack. The operation of the hospital with about 200 patients stopped when the army attacked the hospital by land and air. The Gaza Health Ministry and the World Health Organization have confirmed that the hospital, which has been surrounded by Israeli forces for a month, has ceased operations. The Israeli military intensified a weeks-long siege this week that affected the operation of a hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis.

“Currently, only four health workers are in the hospital to look after patients,” Ashrt al-Qudra, spokesman for the Gaza health ministry, told Reuters. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said since Friday that the Israeli army has not allowed its teams to enter the hospital and look after the patients, including those in critical condition.

“There are currently around 200 patients in the hospital, at least 20 of whom need to be referred to other hospitals for urgent treatment. It is the patient’s right. The death of the patient will have to be paid for this delay,’ said the head of the World Health Organization.

In the past few days, Israeli soldiers raided the hospital where the Palestinians had taken refuge. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health announced on Saturday that the Israeli army had arrested the directors and staff of the hospital where the wounded were being treated. On Friday, the ministry also said a United Nations-led aid team was detained by occupation forces for seven hours.

Quds News Network reported that the Israeli army has turned Nasser Hospital into a military outpost. Xil said Israeli forces detained medical staff in the delivery building for several hours and tied their hands. He also tweeted that they were assaulted and stripped of their clothes. It was also stated that the Israeli forces arrested 70 health workers from the hospital.

It was reported that several severely disabled patients were picked up by the Israeli army, loaded onto military trucks on stretchers and taken to an unknown location. A tweet released this evening said that oxygen shortage has so far led to the death of eight patients and dozens of critically ill patients are feared dead.

At the same time, Israel continues to attack Al-Amal Hospital, the only major medical facility still operating in Khan Younis. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said on Sunday that Israeli forces had aimed artillery at the hospital’s third floor.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is adamant that there will be a ground assault on Rafah, home to more than 1.4 million Palestinians. The United States and other Israeli allies have said they will not recognize the occupation of Rafah, but it is unclear what they will do if Israel proceeds with an approach of total victory.
