Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip, can no longer treat patients. There is no more fuel to keep generators running, according to Hamas’ Health Ministry. “The hospital has no power, internet and not even water and medical supplies,” the hospital director said in a telephone conversation with news channel Al Jazeera. ‘We are completely cut off from the whole world. We are just minutes away from impending death.”
According to the Minister of Health on behalf of Hamas, the power outage has put 39 babies at risk due to a lack of oxygen and medicine. These numbers cannot be independently verified. The hospital is surrounded by Israeli soldiers. According to the director, families have been killed trying to leave the hospital grounds. “Every moving person in the hospital complex is a target.” According to the director, snipers and combat drones are active.
Not only patients and employees are trapped on the Al Shifa site. Thousands of refugee Palestinians also reside there. Israel believes that Hamas is active in tunnels under Al Shifa and other hospitals, but Hamas denies this.
Doctors Without Borders said early this morning that attacks on the hospital “have increased dramatically in intensity in recent hours.” According to local authorities, Al Shifa was hit yesterday by an Israeli airstrike, resulting in thirteen deaths.
