Israeli Attack on Gaza Strip: Diplomatic Risks, Targeting Hospitals, and International Concerns

Since the start of the attack on the Gaza Strip, there has been much talk about targeting hospitals and Israel’s targets behind these operations, while media reports warn of diplomatic risks between Washington and Tel Aviv in this regard.

Israel says that Hamas elements and capabilities are located inside and under hospitals in the Gaza Strip, while America insists on the necessity of not endangering the lives of civilians.

According to foreign reports, any Israeli move towards hospitals may cause diplomatic risks between Washington and Tel Aviv.

Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh said that the Israeli forces had transformed Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza into a military barracks and an address to control the northern Gaza Strip.

Military and political reasons

The British newspaper “The Guardian” spoke in this context, and said that imposing control over Al-Shifa Hospital is a major Israeli goal for military and political reasons, adding that from an Israeli point of view, the complex dominates the center of Gaza City, where, according to the newspaper, Hamas owns much of its administrative infrastructure. In addition to its proximity to the main north-south road, which runs along the coast.

The newspaper continues that destroying Hamas’s ability to rule Gaza is one of the declared goals of the Israeli attack.

For its part, the New York Times covered the same angle, and quoted Israeli officials as saying that the hospital had survived previous Israeli operations out of concern for the lives of civilians, stressing that this was done at the expense of leaving what might be underneath it intact.

The officials said it is a mistake that Israel will not repeat this time, highlighting that the complex located below Al-Shifa Hospital is one of the main Israeli targets in the war and will not be left untouched, despite the growing international outcry over the avoidance of Al-Shifa Hospital and other hospitals.

The former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor told the New York Times that hospitals would be cordoned off and people would be pressured to leave, stressing the necessity of evacuating the hospital or at least what was underneath it.

The US administration says it refuses to see civilians, patients, doctors and nurses trapped in the ongoing fighting in health care facilities in Gaza.

The National Security Advisor at the White House, Jake Sullivan, had confirmed that Washington did not want armed clashes to erupt inside hospitals in the Gaza Strip, which would endanger the lives of civilians, noting that Washington had conveyed its point of view to the Israeli forces in a serious manner.
