Israeli Attack Kills Al Jazeera Journalist in Gaza Strip: Press Freedom Concerns Raised

Jakarta

Attack Israel killed a journalist Al Jazeera and injured a colleague in the Gaza Strip on Friday (15/12) local time.

Al Jazeera initially reported that cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa and Gaza bureau chief Wael Al-Dahdouh were injured at a school in Khan Yunis, where they were hit by “shrapnel from an Israeli missile attack”.

In a subsequent statement condemning the Israeli military, Al Jazeera attributed the injuries to the drone strike.

“After Samer was injured, he was left to bleed to death for more than 5 hours, as Israeli forces prevented ambulances and rescue workers from reaching him, thereby not providing much-needed emergency treatment,” said Al Jazeera, as reported by Al Arabiya and AFP, Saturday ( 12/16/2023).

Al-Dahdouh was injured in the arm and transferred to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, according to an AFP journalist.

In its latest report, Al Jazeera said Al-Dahdouh was able to leave the area of the attack to seek help, “but when he reached the ambulance, medics said they could not return to the scene of the attack because it was too dangerous.”

The Foreign Press Association asked the Israeli military to investigate this incident.

“We consider this a serious blow to press freedom which is already limited in Indonesia Gaza,” he said in a statement.
