The PFA said fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv football club “attacked houses and shops flying the Palestinian flag”. The PFA said it was still waiting for “concrete action” from football’s world governing body FIFA in response to the evidence provided.
Attack shops and burn Palestinian flags
Amsterdam Police Chief Peter Holla also backed the PFA’s allegations, saying there were “incidents on both sides” on Wednesday (6/11) local time, or 24 hours before the match took place in Amsterdam.
Holla said supporters of the Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv “took away flags from the front of buildings in Rokin and destroyed a taxi”.
“Palestinian flags were burned in the Dam area,” he said, referring to Amsterdam’s central square.
Jazie Veldhuyzen, a member of the Amsterdam City Council, told Al Jazeera that Israeli supporters incited violence after arriving in Amsterdam and attacked Palestinian supporters in the city before the match took place.
“They started attacking people’s houses in Amsterdam who were displaying Palestinian flags, and that’s where the violence started,” Veldhuyzen said. In response, Amsterdam residents mobilized themselves and opposed the attacks that began on Wednesday (6/11).
Attack residents on the street and destroy taxis
A similar statement was given by a local resident, Mo Kotesh, who is also a Palestinian activist in the Netherlands. He said that Israeli supporters attacked innocent people in the street, attacked buildings and taxi drivers on Wednesday (6/11), and removed a Palestinian flag from one of the buildings.
Kotesh said supporters of Israel even cursed Arabs by saying: “There are no schools in Gaza because there are no children left.”
Dozens of people injured – dozens of people arrested
A total of 62 people were arrested as a result of the fights in Amsterdam. At the same time, several people, mostly Israeli citizens, were injured, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, up to 10 citizens were injured.
However, most of the 62 people arrested, according to local officials reported by AFP, were released and most were fined. Meanwhile, the injured were allowed to go home from the hospital.
