Israeli Army’s Non-Resistant Protective Vests: New Explanation for High Death Toll

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported on Monday that hundreds of protective vests that arrived for soldiers and reserve forces turned out to be non-resistant to attacks, in what appears to be a new explanation for the high death toll of the Israeli army in its confrontations with Hamas.

On October 9, that is, two days after the start of the battles between Hamas and Israel, The Times of Israel newspaper reported complaints from reserve soldiers that the protective vests were insufficient to protect them, or below the required standard.

On Sunday evening, the Israeli army announced the killing of two soldiers and the injury of another during the ongoing battles in the Gaza Strip, bringing the number of soldiers killed in the Strip to 44, and the total number of soldiers killed since last October 7 to 362, most of them outside Gaza.

An explosives expert at the Egyptian Ministry of Interior, Mohamed Nabil Omar, detailed to Sky News Arabia the reasons for the inability of soldiers’ protective vests to fulfill the purpose for which they were intended, saying:

Each bullet-proof vest has a rated level of protection and protection, and there is no fully protective vest for all types of bullets. Bulletproof suits are often made for a specific type of bullet, and therefore can be penetrated by bullets of another type. It is possible for Hamas to use different types of pistols and bullets, starting with the 9 mm pistol, the automatic rifle, the “Garnov” and the semi-automatic weapon. The bulletproof vests burn, meaning they are not fireproof, and it is likely that Hamas attacked them with incendiary materials. Protective vests also have little effect in protecting against explosives and mines. The protective vest loses a large part of its ability to protect when bullets are directed at it from a close range, so it is possible for the wearer to be seriously injured or killed. Targeting soldiers with snipers and aiming directly at the head is one of the options resorted to in clashes, if they know that their enemies are wearing bullet-proof vests.

It is noteworthy that the protective vest contains plates made of materials such as steel, titanium, or ceramic.

The materials used in manufacturing vests vary in terms of weight and degree of protection, some of which can protect the body from Kalashnikov rifle firing at close range.

The work of these plates is to absorb the energy generated by the bullet and stop it before it penetrates the body.
