Israeli Army Spokesman: Situation Still Out of Control After Hamas Attack

An Israeli army spokesman said on Sunday that the situation in his country is still out of complete control after the sudden Hamas attack. Early on Saturday, the movement launched a rapid attack on Israel, described as the largest in the movement’s history. The provisional toll announced by health and military sources indicates more than 200 dead and a thousand wounded in Israel, and about 230 dead in Gaza.

While a number of international efforts continue to stop the fighting, an Israeli army spokesman confirmed on Sunday that the situation in his country is still out of complete control after the rapid and sudden attack launched by Hamas early Saturday against Israel. The spokesman said that fighting is still continuing in southern Israel and there are still members of Hamas inside the country.

He added that the number of civilians and soldiers detained by Hamas in Gaza will shape the future of this war.

Meanwhile, the United States and Israel held “in-depth discussions” about Tel Aviv’s military aid needs in the face of a Hamas attack, a senior White House official said.

The official indicated the possibility that the American side would issue an announcement on Sunday in this context, but he acknowledged that the United States is witnessing a complex parliamentary situation, as one of the two chambers of Congress is suffering from paralysis after the dismissal of its Republican leader. He said that without a speaker of the House of Representatives, “this will be an unprecedented situation that we will have to manage.”

He stated that Washington is working with other governments to ensure that the crisis does not spread and is contained in Gaza.

For its part, the US State Department revealed that Secretary Anthony Blinken called, during a call with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, to coordinate efforts to achieve an immediate cessation of Hamas attacks.

The United Nations, NATO, and Western parties, led by the United States and European countries, condemned the attack carried out on Saturday by the Hamas movement in Israel, which included launching rockets, incursions, and captures, while Moscow called for “restraint” and Ankara to “act rationally.”

On the other hand, Iran and Syria announced their support for the operation, and Lebanese Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen congratulated Hamas. The Arab League and a number of its member states called for “restraint,” stressing the need to move the peace process forward.
