Two Israeli army had been shot and killed in a “security incident” near the border Egypt on Saturday (3/6) morning local time.
Reported by the media The Times of IsraelSaturday (3/6/2023), military Israel or the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said there was a further exchange of fire in the area several hours later, on Israeli territory, which resulted in the death of a gunman.
The incident took place near Mount Sagi in the Negev desert. The incident is being investigated by the Israeli military.
The IDF initially banned publication of the deaths of the two soldiers — one male and one female — until their families were notified.
“This morning there was a security incident in the Paran Regional Brigade area,” IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told reporters.
“In that incident, there were two fatalities. The IDF is currently investigating the incident and will update more details later,” he added.
Hours later, the IDF said there had been a renewed exchange of fire in the area of the initial attack, as troops searched for the shooting suspects. One suspect in the shooting died in the shootout.
Israeli forces are continuing to search for other possible attackers in the area.
The Israel-Egypt border has been largely peaceful since the two countries signed a peace treaty in 1979. In the past decade, Israel has built a massive barrier fence along the border, largely aimed at keeping out African migrants and militants operating in the Sinai. Egypt.
