Jerusalem. Israeli aircraft hit and killed two Hezbollah militants in southern Syria, the Israeli military said Thursday, the latest in a series of strikes against the Iran-backed Shiite group near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
The army identified one of those killed as Ahmed al-Jabr. It accused al-Jabr of carrying out military operations in Syria’s Quneitra province, near the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.
As of Thursday, Hezbollah had not announced the deaths of any militants. But pro-government Syrian radio Sham FM and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war watchdog, reported that an Israeli strike hit a car in southern Syria, killing two people in the town of Khan Arnabeh.
In recent months, Israel has carried out frequent such attacks on the shores of the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981.
Israel says it is targeting Iranian-linked militants. It has also pledged to end Iran’s entrenchment in Syria, where thousands of Iranian-backed fighters are deployed. Syria is a key route for Iran’s arms shipments to the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated in the 11-month war between Israel and Hamas, mainly along Israel’s tense northern border with Lebanon.
On Thursday, Hezbollah claimed several attacks in northern Israel, and the Israeli military reported that air raid sirens had been activated as the group’s explosive drones fell in open areas. The Israeli military also said it intercepted a “suspicious aerial target” that crossed from Lebanon into Israeli territory.
