The Israeli army has fired rockets at targets in the Gaza Strip. This comes after a day of rocket attacks from Lebanon towards Israel, in which two people were injured. The past two nights have also been restless on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

According to the army, four targets of the Hamas militant movement, which controls the Gaza Strip, have been bombed. Two tunnels and two weapons factories would have been targeted. It is not clear whether there were any casualties. Israel has not yet carried out any military action in Lebanon.

Sirens are also going off in southern Israel. That happened just after the rockets were fired into Gaza.

Prime Minister Netanyahu announced last night that he would hit back hard after rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza. That violence from Gaza was in response to the Israeli police’s intervention on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem over the past two nights.

Previous violence on the Temple Mount

Palestinians had barricaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in recent nights, after which the Israeli police entered the mosque and acted with tear gas, among other things. Dozens of people were injured and hundreds arrested.

The situation around the Al-Aqsa Mosque is highly flammable, because the mosque is located on a holy site for both Jews and Muslims. It has been agreed that only Muslims are allowed to pray there, but Palestinians are afraid that Israel will also exempt the Temple Mount for Jewish believers.

Violence is escalating now that Muslims are busy with Ramadan and the Jewish Passover Pesach has also started. It is busier than usual in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Israel is deploying extra security troops. In recent years, there have been frequent confrontations at the holy site in Jerzulem.
