The Israeli army confirmed the death of several Hamas military commanders during the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
This was reported by the BBC.
Earlier, the military wing of the Palestinian Brigades Izz ad-Din al-Qassam announced the news.
Among the dead were the commander of Hamas’ northern brigade, Ahmed Ghandour, and his deputy, Wael Rajeb, as well as the head of the rocket unit, Ayman Siam, senior operative Farsan Khalifa, and the commander of the northern division, Rafet Salman.
Ghandour was the head of the northern brigade of Hamas’ military wing in Gaza and one of the group’s most senior military commanders.
He was reportedly a close confidant of Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif and masterminded the 2006 kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
In 2017, the US State Department added him to the list of international terrorists.
Hamas released 17 hostages – 13 Israelis, one Russian and three Thais
Israeli media reports that one of the hostages has dual citizenship
Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are now taking refuge in southern Gaza, where the Israeli army believes the remaining Hamas leaders are hiding in tunnels.
On Thursday, before the start of a four-day pause in hostilities, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said that once the brief truce with Hamas ends, the military campaign will resume in intensity for at least another two months.
