The Israel Defense Forces said Saturday that Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an airstrike on the group’s headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday. Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed group led by Nasrallah for 32 years, has not confirmed its leader’s death.
However, a source from the group cited by the AFP news agency assured – on condition of anonymity, given the sensitivity of the information – that contact with Nasrallah had been lost on Friday afternoon, after the bombing. Rumors of his death began to spread shortly after the Israeli attack.
On X (Twitter), Israeli forces posted that their units had “eliminated Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the terrorist organization Hezbollah.” The text, published by spokesman Nadav Shoshani, added that “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.” Consulted by the AFP agency, another spokesman, David Avraham, confirmed that the head of Hezbollah was “eliminated.”
Other leaders died
The head of the Israeli Army, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, said in a statement that his forces will go to anyone who threatens the citizens of Israel. «This is not the end of our repertoire. The message is simple: we tell anyone who threatens Israelis that we know how to get to them,” he said.
“During Hassan Nasrallah’s 32-year reign as Secretary General of Hezbollah, he was responsible for the murder of several Israeli citizens and soldiers, as well as the planning and execution of hundreds of terrorist activities,” a statement from the Israeli army said. «He was responsible for directing and executing attacks around the world, where citizens of different countries were murdered. Nasrallah was the main orchestrator and strategic leader of the organization.”
Ali Karake, identified by Israel as commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, and an unknown number of senior officers of the Shiite group were also killed in the operation. Israel launched a new wave of airstrikes against the southern suburbs of Beirut and other areas of Lebanon this Saturday, a day after the massive attack against the same area in the Dahiyeh neighborhood, where Nasrallah was reportedly killed.
