Israeli archaeologists unearth 3,100-year-old Jerubbaal inscription

JAKARTA – Recently arkelog Israel found an inscription written in ink on a jar with the name ‘Jerubbaal’. It is estimated that the alphabetic inscription dates back to 1,100 BC during the time of the Bible recorders.

The ancient inscription was found in a storage pit at Khirbat er-Ra’I, an archaeological site about 3 km northwest of Tel Lachish in Israel. The inscription was written in ink on a jug, a small personal earthenware vessel that held about a liter, and may have contained oil, perfume, or medicine.

“The name ‘Jerubbaal’ is familiar from the biblical tradition in the Book of Judges as an alternative name for judge Gideon ben Yoash,” said Professor Yossef Garfinkel of the Institute of Archeology at Hebrew University and Dr. Saar Ganor of the Israel Antiquities Authority quoted SCI-News, Thursday (15/7/2021).

Inscriptions from the Judge period are extremely rare and almost unrivaled in archeology Israel. “The name ‘Jerubbaal’ only appears in the Bible during the period of Judges, but is now also found in archaeological contexts, in strata dating from this period,” he said.

GArfinkel explains, in a similar way, that the name ‘Ishbaal,’ only mentioned in the Bible during King David’s monarchy, is found in the date strata of that period at the Khirbat Qeiyafa site.

“The fact that identical names are mentioned in the Bible and also found in inscriptions recovered from archaeological excavations suggests that memory was preserved and passed down from generation to generation,” he said.
