A federal prosecutor in New York announced on Monday that he has charged an Israeli-American man with espionage for China who accuses Hunter Biden, the son of the Democratic president, of corruption.

Gal Luft, 57, director of an energy think tank, is accused of “conspiring with others to promote China’s interests as an agent” for Beijing, “without register as a foreign agent as required by U.S. law,” said a statement from the office of Federal Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams. Gal Luft is also prosecuted for “arms trafficking”, “violations of sanctions against Iran” and for “false declarations to federal agents”.

Arrested in Cyprus in February 2023, he is now on the run after being released on bail pending extradition, says the Ministry of Justice. He faces up to 20 years in prison on the most serious charges.

A key witness

Gal Luft, who worked as an adviser for the Chinese state-controlled energy company CEFC, has for several years accused Joe Biden’s younger brother, Hunter, of having secretly accepted millions of dollars of this company. He claims, in a video published by the New York Post on July 5, to have shared this information with two American federal prosecutors and four FBI agents in Brussels in March 2019. Several elected conservatives are demanding that Mr. Luft testify before Congress.

“He’s a key witness,” Republican Senator Ron Johnson told Fox News on Sunday. “We have to provide him with immunity so he can testify and tell his story.” “Gal Luft is an extremely credible witness to the corruption of the Biden family,” Republican elected official James Comer tweeted on Friday.

In May, elected Republicans from a parliamentary committee responsible for overseeing the executive published a report which assures that members of the family of Joe Biden and their associates had received nearly 10 million dollars from foreign companies, including Chinese. and Romanian. These accusations are part of a long-running campaign targeting the controversial affairs of Hunter Biden, the son of the troubled Democratic president. Republicans accuse him of having capitalized on his name and his father’s address book, when the latter was Barack Obama’s vice-president (2009-2017), in order to enter into dubious contracts in several countries.
