DAMASCUS – Air attack Israel in Damascus, Syria, killed a high-ranking official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Iran Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi.
Syrian state media, Syrian Arab News Agency (A LOT), reported Monday’s attack destroyed a building adjacent to the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, killing at least six people.
Half Iran, Tasnimidentified the building as the Iranian Consulate and ambassador’s residence.
According to reports Tasnim, General Zahedi, a senior commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force, was among the dead. His deputy was reportedly killed as well.
According to the correspondent Reuters in Damascus, the consulate was razed, in what was described as a shocking escalation of the conflict in the Middle East that would pit Israel against Iran and its allies.
Israel has not commented on the attack. Tel Aviv rarely acknowledges its air strikes against Syria, which Damascus has repeatedly condemned as a violation of its sovereignty.
“The attack on the consulate is a violation of all international conventions,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a telephone call to his Syrian counterpart.
He added that Tehran would hold Israel accountable.
