The Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes and artillery fire on targets in southern Lebanon after the pro-Iranian movement “Hezbollah” carried out several attacks on army posts on the Lebanese-Israeli border, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Israeli positions near the village of Margaliot near the Golan Heights and near the border towns of Jifta, Matat, Shomerah and Arab al-Aramshe in the southwest were also attacked, the army said.
For its part, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for several attacks near the Lebanese border and said it had carried out “direct strikes”.
In response, the Israeli army bombed several towns in the western and central sectors of South Lebanon, including Al Labuneh, Al Nakura, Blida, Rab Tlatin, Markaba, Tair Harfa, Haunin, Aitaroun, Odeiseh, Mais al Jabal, Aita al Shaab and Houlah.
Since the beginning of the war in Gaza on October 7, there have been repeated clashes between the Israeli army and Hezbollah on the border between Israel and Lebanon, DPA recalls.
There are already casualties on both sides. This is the worst escalation since the second war in Lebanon in 2006.
Israel has warned Hezbollah that if the attacks continue, the Lebanese capital Beirut will suffer a fate similar to that of Gaza.
Islamic Jihad may withdraw from Israeli hostage talks
The leader of “Islamic Jihad” Ziad al-Nakhla said today that the way the Israeli hostage negotiations are being conducted could force his group not to agree to any deal, Reuters reported.
The group added that it may hold its hostages “for better circumstances”.
Meanwhile, Qatar called on Israel and Hamas to use the opportunity provided by its mediation to agree on the release of the hostages and stressed that the worsening situation in Gaza was hindering its efforts, reported AFP.
“We believe that there is no other option for both sides other than this mediation,” warned Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari at a press conference in Doha. He expressed a desire for the situation to evolve “to a situation where we could see a glimmer of hope (for an exit from) this terrible crisis”.
Qatar has been conducting intensive diplomacy to try to secure the release of the hostages since Hamas’ unprecedented attack on southern Israel more than a month ago, in which Israeli officials say around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, have been killed. Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip since then has killed 11,240 people, according to the health ministry of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which said many of those killed were civilians, including many children.
The armed wing of “Hamas” yesterday accused Israel of “stalking” during the discussions for the possible release of dozens of hostages, which are being conducted with the mediation of Qatar.
“With the mediation of Qatar, efforts were made to release (the hostages) in exchange for the release of 200 Palestinian children and 75 Palestinian women from enemy prisons,” Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida said in an audio recording released by Hamas. “. Israel “requested the release of 100 (hostages), we informed the mediator that we can release the hostages if we get a five-day truce – i.e. a ceasefire and the passage of aid to all our people in the Gaza Strip – but the enemy pushed through,” he said he.
Al Ansari declined to comment on details of the talks, but said his country remains “hopeful” that it will negotiate more hostage releases.
