Army: Israel is ready to fight on multiple fronts
Israel has increased its military presence along the border with Lebanon, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said on Monday, indicating that Israel is ready to fight on two fronts or more.
The situation on the Israel-Lebanon border has escalated as Israel concentrates troops and heavy armored vehicles along the Gaza Strip in response to an attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas, the Lebanese Shia militant group Hezbollah has fired several times at Israel from the Lebanese territory, to which Israel has responded with counterfire. At least seven people died in mutual shootings, including four Hezbollah fighters on the Lebanese side.
Hagari said Hezbollah tried to distract the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip with several attacks yesterday, with the knowledge and support of Iran. He stressed that Israel will resolutely respond to any attack on its territory, adding that the army is capable of fighting on two or more fronts.
Although the main target now is the Gaza Strip, military forces are being saved for a possible further confrontation, Hagari said. “If Hezbollah makes the mistake of probing us, the response will be deadly,” Hagari said.
