The Israeli army spokesman, Daniel Hagari, said in his post on his “X” account: “A short while ago, Air Force fighters attacked the headquarters of the Hezbollah terrorist organization’s operations on Lebanese territory.”
Since Wednesday morning, the Israeli army has fired artillery and tanks at a number of sites in southern Lebanon.
In addition, several launching operations were detected targeting Israeli forces from Lebanese territory towards the Jurin area and the Manara area.
Israel previously said that it was not seeking to open a front in the north, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Beirut would turn “into Gaza” if Hezbollah started an all-out war.
But with more than 80,000 Israelis fleeing towns and villages in the north, Israel has also said it wants to push Hezbollah away from the border in line with a UN resolution that ended the 2006 war.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said on Monday: “We will return the residents of the north to their homes on the border after full security is restored. We prefer to do this with understanding, and to ensure that the border area is free of terrorists and does not allow direct threats to our citizens.”
He added, “If such a process is not implemented diplomatically, we will not hesitate to act.”
For his part, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that the United States does not want to see the conflict expand into “a larger war or a regional war,” adding: “We call on Hezbollah to ensure that it does not do things that would ignite a broader conflict.”
