The Israeli army spokesman announced, on Tuesday night, the start of raids on the Gaza Strip, through the Israeli Air Force.
This comes after shells were fired from the Gaza Strip, following the death of a leader in the Jihad movement in an Israeli prison after a hunger strike that lasted 87 days, in the first death of a Palestinian detainee on hunger strike in more than 3 decades.
The Israeli Prisons Administration said that Khader Adnan, who was awaiting trial, “was found unconscious in his cell on Tuesday morning,” and added that he was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead after attempts to resuscitate him.
Armed Palestinian factions fired rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israel, two of which landed in the city of Sderot, injuring 3 people.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a meeting with security officials to assess the situation, and an official in the Israeli army said that Israel “will respond at a time and place that it will specify.”
