Israel will continue to demolish historic Muslim tombs in Jerusalem

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Israel is said to be planning to continue the eviction of a historic Muslim tomb located in Jerusalem. This news was conveyed by the Chairman of the Committee for the Preservation of Islamic Cemeteries in Jerusalem, Mustafa Abu Zahra.

In the past two weeks, Israeli authorities have reportedly demolished Muslim graves in the city, reopening the graves of Jordanian soldiers killed in the 1967 war.

The plan is that Israeli authorities in Jerusalem will demolish the Tomb of Al-Yusufiyah to create a ‘Bible Footprint,’ which will reportedly become one of the city’s national parks.

Quoting from the Palestinian news agency, WAFAThis is not the first time that Israel has demolished Muslim tombs.

In December 2020, the Israeli authorities had torn down the walls of the tomb of Al-Yusufiyah earlier.

In 2014, Israeli authorities in the region also transferred 20 Jordanian soldiers who died during the war to the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and Martyrs Cemetery.

Earlier, Israel announced plans to build up to 1,355 new Jewish homes to become settlements in the West Bank that have been occupied by Palestinians since the 1967 6-Day War in October.

The announcement of the construction of new settlements was delivered directly by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

As reported AFP, Israel’s Minister of Housing Zeev Elkin issued a statement that, “To strengthen the Jewish presence (in the West Bank) is essential to the Zionist vision.”

Nevertheless, there are at least 475,000 Israeli Jews living in the West Bank. However, the residence is illegal when referring to international law.

The reason is, the area was claimed as part of the Palestinian territories even though Israel claimed to have seized it.

Anti-occupation activist Peace Now said Bennet’s announcement of the construction of Jewish settlements showed his ideology was the same as that of the previous Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. They also demanded Bennett stop the policy.

“This government is clearly continuing the policy de facto annexation of Netanyahu,” Peace Now said in a statement.

Annexation itself is an act of forcibly taking the land (territory) of another person (state) to be united with its own land (state), quoted from KBBI.
