On Friday, Israel announced that it had reduced the death toll as a result of the attack launched by Hamas on October 7 from 1,400 to 1,200, indicating that this was due to counting the bodies of the movement’s militants among the initial death toll on its territory.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Hayat told Agence France-Presse that the authorities had “updated” the tally because “many of the previously unidentified bodies” belonged to members who “participated in the Hamas terrorist attack and were not Israeli victims.”
The Israeli authorities had previously announced the killing of 1,400 people as a result of the attack carried out by Hamas fighters on the south of the Hebrew State from the Gaza Strip. The majority of them were civilians and most of them died on the first day of the unprecedented attack (October 7, 2023) since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
But in a statement issued on Friday that was not directly related to the attack, Hayat, while criticizing the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), said that Hamas had killed “about 1,200 people.”
The spokesman confirmed the new toll in a separate statement sent to Agence France-Presse.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza, affiliated with the Hamas movement, announced on Friday that the death toll as a result of the Israeli bombing in the Strip had risen to 11,078 people on the thirty-fifth day of the war on Gaza.

It is noteworthy that fighters kidnapped about 240 people, including Israelis and foreigners, and transported them to the Gaza Strip.
