A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that Israel will, on Sunday, summon the ambassadors of countries that voted for full membership of Palestine in the United Nations for a “discussion of protest.”
Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein said in a post on Saturday, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will call the ambassadors of countries that voted in the Security Council to renew the status of the Palestinians in the United Nations to hold a dialogue of accusation. “
The United States used its veto power against a draft resolution that supports the Palestinian request for full membership in the United Nations, and acknowledges that the Security Council has submitted a proposal to the General Assembly to fully give them membership in the United Nations.
The draft resolution, drafted by Algeria, was supported by 12 members, while Britain abstained from voting, and the United States used its leaflet against it.
The Palestinian president criticized how Washington used its “veto” in the UN Security Council to prevent Palestine from gaining full membership in the United Nations.
For any decision to be approved by the 15-member Council, the support of at least 9 countries is required, none of which are permanent members – the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia and China – using their veto power.
A country is accepted as a member of the United Nations by a decision issued by the General Assembly with a two-thirds majority, but only after a positive recommendation in this regard from the UN Security Council.
According to the Palestinian Authority, 137 of the 193 UN member states have so far recognized the State of Palestine.
In September 2011, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas submitted a request “for the State of Palestine to join the United Nations.”
Although his campaign did not bear fruit, in November 2012 the Palestinians were granted the status of a “non-member observer state” in the United Nations.
