Israel offers people with weakened immune systems a third shot of the corona vaccine. Israeli Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz told Kan. The Moderna vaccine will be used for that third shot. However, the Israeli government is not yet sure whether this booster will also be used in general.

So far, Israel has used almost only BioNTech/Pfizer’s vaccine in the vaccination campaign, but that stock is expected to be exhausted by the end of this month. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Sunday that he has agreed with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla that the next delivery will be brought forward to August 1, instead of September.
The delta variant is also hitting Israel, although more than half (56 percent) of the population is now fully vaccinated. A few weeks ago, the number of new infections was less than 10 per day, now there are 450 per day.
However, there is still no question of a rapid third shot for the entire population, says Sharon Alroy-Preis, head of public health at the Ministry of Health. “It’s fairly complex,” Alroy-Preis also told Kan. “Today, we mainly see outbreaks among children and their parents, and they were often not vaccinated in January and February.”
There are 46 corona patients in Israeli hospitals who are in serious condition, half of whom have been vaccinated. Most are at risk patients.
