Israel to increase protection of its athletes at Olympic Games

Paris. Israeli intelligence services will step up protection for the country’s athletes taking part in the 2024 Paris Olympics following attacks on leaders of the Hezbollah and Hamas movements, the Ynet news portal reported on Wednesday.

“The General Security Service has strengthened the security of the Israeli delegation to the Paris Olympics, and an additional group will be sent to protect the delegation’s participants in the Olympic Village and outside its confines,” the outlet reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Palestinian Hamas movement reported the death of its political bureau chief Ismail Haniya as a result of an Israeli strike on his residence in Tehran, where he was visiting to participate in the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s new president, Masud Pezeshkian.

The day before, the Israel Defense Forces reported an attack on the Lebanese capital of Beirut, targeting the senior commander of the Shiite movement Hezbollah, Fuad Shukr, “responsible for the murder of Israeli civilians”, who, according to the army, was eliminated during the bombing.

The movement confirmed Shukr’s presence inside the building at the time of the attack, adding that it is awaiting the results of the search and rescue operation regarding the fate of Shukr and other residents.

The Lebanese health ministry was quoted as saying by Al Mayadeen television that at least 74 civilians were injured and four, including two children, were killed in the attack.
