Israel take point in tense match with France in Paris, England take revenge

Israel got their first point in Group 2 of League A, the highest level in the competition, in the away game against France in the Nations League. As a result of Belgium’s 0-0 draw and 0-1 loss against Italy, France and Italy secured a place in the quarter-finals.

The result was less important in Paris. More importantly, he remained calm, after last week’s turmoil in Amsterdam surrounding the Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The French authorities had taken serious security measures, such as deploying 4,000 police officers. Only French and Israeli flags were allowed in the stadium. Palestinian flags and banners were banned inside. Demonstrations were permitted elsewhere in the city.

Whistling, booing and a few riots

The match was played in front of largely empty stands. Only nearly 20,000 of the 80,000 seats in the Stade de France were used. The stands were packed, including French President Emmanuel Macron and former presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande.

Whistling and booing came from the stands as the Israeli national anthem played. These sounds were also heard at the game when the Israeli ball was in possession. Some disturbances in the stands were also reported.

Other than that, it was mostly a dull affair on the field. France played at too low a pace to trouble the visitors and Israel stayed upright, thanks in part to goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

Controversy in the stands at the Stade de France

At the beginning, Michael Olise (Bayern Munich), Randal Kolo Muani (Paris Saint-Germain) and Bradley Barcola (Paris Saint-Germain) had to make Mbappé forget, but that didn’t really work. All three attackers missed some chances

In fact, Israel had the best chance in the first half, when Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Raz Shlomo lost the ball completely after a free kick extended by Dor Turgeman.

France continued to push in the second half. Fifteen minutes before the end, Warren Zaire-Emery was able to put the ball into the goal from close range, but PSG’s 18-year-old talent missed. Goalkeeper Peretz made another good save. In injury time, the star saved Peretz again, this time on a bet by substitute Christopher Nkunku.

After the final whistle, there was whistling and booing again, also due to the poor performance of the home team.

Tonali’s match winner for Italy

In Brussels, Belgium faced Italy for their last chance, but the Red Devils fell behind after eleven minutes. Giovanni Di Lorenzo sent off Maxim De Cuyper and served up prodigal son Sandro Tonali, who scored his first international goal.

The second half in Brussels was much more interesting. Belgium got the 1-1 through Loïs Openda, Romelu Lukaku and Wout Faes (post), but Italy had the best chance of the second goal through Mateo Retegui.

Credit slowly slipped away from Belgium, who lost to Italy for the 17th time in 26 games and must fight against relegation.

England will no longer surprise

England took revenge on Greece in group 2 of division B, who had defeated the ‘Three Lions’ for the first time last month. At Wembley of all places. Promotion to Division A came along for the Greeks after that amazing 2-1 victory, but in Athens England dominated from the first minute and won 3-0.

Before his return, England captain Harry Kane had expressed his dismay at the number of teams suspended (nine) for this international break. He suggested that some of those absent would indeed have been present if new national coach Thomas Tuchel, who starts in January, had already been in charge.

Ollie Watkins

Interim coach Lee Carsley started the striker, who has scored as many goals in nineteen games this season, on the bench against the Greeks. Substitute Ollie Watkins completed his selection after seven minutes by completing some preparatory work with former PSV player Noni Madueke: 0-1.

Greece hardly created any chances and found goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Fifteen minutes before the end, he saw how his Greek colleague Odysseas Vlachodimos got the score 0-2: a shot from Jude Bellingham went off the post and into the goalkeeper. Substitute Curtis Jones marked his international debut with an effective back-heel.
