Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Two out of three attacks rocket which was launched from the direction Lebanon hit Israel on Wednesday (4/8).
Israel then responded to the rocket fire with artillery fire towards Lebanon.
The rocket attack came after an attack on a tanker operated by an Israeli company off the coast of Oman last week. Iran is accused of being behind the attack that killed two crew members who are British and Romanian nationals, respectively.
A witness in Lebanon reported several rockets were fired at Israel.
Sirens warning of rocket attacks were heard in Israel, including in the town of Kiryat Shmona, near the Lebanese border.
The Israeli military said three rockets were launched from Lebanon. One of them fell near the Israeli border and the remaining two rockets hit the territory of Prime Minister Naftali Bennet’s country.
“In retaliation, (Israeli) artillery forces attacked Lebanese territory,” the Israeli Armed Forces said in a press statement, as quoted by Reuters.
Two hours after the incident, the Israeli military again fired artillery fire at unidentified targets along the border with Lebanon.
Lebanon’s border area has been largely deserted since Israel fought a war against Hezbollah in 2006.
Israel’s emergency department, Magen David Adom, said there were no casualties in the attack. According to them the rockets only caused forest fires.
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the rocket attack. The area is controlled by Hezbollah, a Shiite militia group in Lebanon allied with Iran.
The rocket attack came after Iran was accused by Israel of carrying out an attack on the tanker Mercer Street off the coast of Oman, on July 29.
The Liberian-flagged ship is operated by an Israeli company, Zodiac Maritime. The ship was attacked while en route to Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
In response to the attack, Britain, Romania and Liberia told the United Nations Security Council it was possible Iran used more than one drone to attack the Mercer Street ship.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said they could take their own action against Iran if necessary regarding the tanker attack.
Meanwhile, Iran, as the accused party, denied attacking the tanker.
