Six pro-Iranian fighters were killed as a result of an air strike that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights suggested was launched by Israel on Monday night on sites in eastern Syria, where fighter groups supported by Tehran are deployed.
The toll came hours after the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced after midnight that two Syrian soldiers had been injured as a result of another Israeli strike that targeted military sites near the city of Deir ez-Zor.
The Observatory reported that “six non-Syrian fighters were killed as a result of an aerial bombardment that was likely Israeli, targeting on Monday evening three sites of pro-Iranian groups in an area near the city of Albukamal, near the Syrian-Iraqi border.”
Also, 4 members of the regime forces were injured, including 2 in critical condition, in an air strike on the Radar Battalion area at the top of Mount Harabesh in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor. The targeting resulted in the destruction of the radar point belonging to the “Electronic Insurance Brigade” affiliated with the “Iranian Militias” in the Harabesh neighborhood in the city of Deir ez-Zor, according to the Observatory.
It is noteworthy that the targeted battalion includes regime air forces and pro-Iranian forces.
Iranian and Iraqi militias and groups loyal to Tehran, including the Lebanese Hezbollah, are deployed in a large area in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, especially between the cities of Al-Bukamal and Al-Mayadeen. The Observatory estimates the number of members of these groups at about 15,000 fighters. The Syrian Ministry of Defense, for its part, reported other strikes that targeted sites in the same governorate.
It stated in a statement that around 23:50 (20:50 GMT) on Monday evening, “the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack on some positions of our armed forces in the vicinity of the city of Deir ez-Zor,” which led to “two soldiers being injured and some material losses occurring.” . According to the Observatory, military air forces and pro-Iranian groups are stationed at the targeted location.
Since the start of the conflict in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria, targeting regime forces positions and Iranian and Hezbollah targets. It rarely confirms the implementation of strikes, but it repeatedly confronts what it describes as Iran’s attempts to establish its military presence in Syria.
Since the beginning of the year, 2023, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has counted 32 times during which Israel has targeted Syrian territory, 24 of which were air strikes and 8 ground strikes. These strikes resulted in the injury and destruction of about 71 targets, including weapons and ammunition depots, headquarters, centers, and vehicles.
On September 14, two Syrian soldiers were killed as a result of Israeli bombing on Tartous Governorate in the west of the country.
Since 2011, Syria has witnessed a bloody, multi-faceted conflict, which has caused the death of more than half a million people, massive destruction of infrastructure, and the displacement and displacement of more than half of the population inside and outside the country.
