Moscow. December 1. INTERFAX.RU – The Israeli army (IDF) is resuming hostilities against the Palestinian Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip due to the movement’s fighters violating the terms of the truce, the IDF press service reported.
“The Israel Defense Forces have resumed hostilities against the terrorist organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip,” reads a message posted on the army’s telegram channel.
It notes that “Hamas violated the operational pause and, in addition, opened fire towards Israeli territory.”
As the IDF previously reported, the rocket fired from the Gaza Strip was intercepted by Israeli air defenses.
The Haaretz newspaper, citing media close to the Palestinian Hamas movement, reported that on Friday morning the sounds of gunfire and several explosions were heard in northern Gaza.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal, citing Egyptian officials, reported that Israel and Hamas agreed to extend the truce for another eighth day, Friday.
At the same time, as CNN noted, “the truce between Israel and Hamas appeared to expire on Friday, as there were no immediate signs of reaching an agreement to further extend the hostage agreement.”
The Jerusalem Post writes that “attempts to extend the ceasefire and secure the release of additional hostages appear to have failed overnight.”
Media reports of intense clashes in the Sheikh Radwan area of Gaza City in the north of the strip.
The IDF press office said Israeli Air Force planes were “currently striking terrorist targets” in the enclave. The IDF also said it intercepted several rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. The Haaretz newspaper, citing Palestinian sources, writes about Israeli airstrikes on targets in the south of the Gaza Strip, artillery shelling east of Khan Yunis and in Rafah.
