Israel Responds to Iranian Attack with Success, Shifts Power in Middle East

Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari said that the elimination of such a large-scale attack is a great success for Israel.

An unnamed Israeli intelligence source described the Iranian action as a crushing failure when no target was destroyed in such a large-scale attack. He highlighted the help of the USA, Great Britain, France, but also Jordan. Iran has to deal with the fact that some Arab countries opposed its action. The question is how the balance of power in the Middle East will change.

On Sunday, it was mainly expected how Israel would respond to the attack, whether it would retaliate and to what extent. However, it does not have US support for it. US President Joe Biden has said unequivocally that he is against retaliation. But the attack prompted the West to take a tougher stance towards Iran and perhaps even to form an anti-Iranian coalition.

It may also have an impact on the conflict in Gaza, as Iran and its allies are the main backers of Hamas. But it is possible that the US will also pressure Israel, which it helped, to end the conflict in Gaza.

Iran attacked Israel in retaliation for the death of seven Iranian officers in the bombing of the Iranian consulate in Syria. Israel has not claimed it, but is believed to be behind it.
