JERUSALEM –
JERUSALEM (AP) – Israel reported more than 6,000 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, the highest increase in a day since February.
Israel launched one of the most successful vaccination campaigns in the world beginning late last year. However, in recent weeks it has seen a spike in cases driven by the contagious delta variant of the virus.
The authorities have increased restrictions on movement and reinstated the rules on masks in enclosed spaces.
More than 85% of Israeli adults have completed their vaccination, and authorities are calling in those over 60 for a third dose. The Health Ministry noted that 577,899 people had received a booster injection.
The Ministry reported 6,275 new cases on Monday, with 4.84% positive in more than 130,000 tests. Unvaccinated people, especially those over 60, are much more likely to become seriously ill, according to Israeli government data.
