JERUSALEM, KOMPAS.TV – Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stressed that the United States (US) could not reopen the consulate for Palestinians in Jerusalem.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised to reopen the consulate in Palestine. This is part of the Joe Biden administration’s efforts to restore relations with the Palestinian Authority.
US-Palestinian relations broke when Donald Trump took office. In 2018, US-Palestinian relations strained after Trump moved the US embassy to Israel to Jerusalem, while closing the Palestinian consulate.
The Trump administration downgraded the function of the Palestinian consulate to subordinate the US embassy to Israel.
“There is no room for another American consulate in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the capital of one state and that state is Israel,” Bennett was quoted as saying Associated Press on Saturday (6/11/2021).

Israel itself has been claiming all of Jerusalem as its territory and is now making it its capital. While the Palestinians want the eastern part of the old city as a candidate for the capital.
In response to Bennett’s remarks, the Palestinian Authority challenged the “credibility” of the US and the international community.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry urges the US and the international community to take a stand on Israel’s unilateral claims.
“It is time for the international community to respect its obligations and assume legal and moral responsibility for the occupation and occupation (of Israel), and stop their deplorable trust in the Israeli government,” the Palestinian foreign ministry said in a statement. WAFA.
