Israel: Palestinian President Abbas threatens to end relations

Because of the controversial Middle East plan by US President Donald Trump, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to break off all relations with Israel and the United States. Abbas said at a short-term Arab League meeting in Cairo that he had sent two messages to the United States and Israel.

The Palestinian Authority will cut all security ties with Israel and the United States, Abbas said. Trump’s Middle East plan was a “violation of the Oslo Accords” that occurred in the 1990s Israel had been signed. Israel would have to take responsibility as an occupying power.

Abbas had already cut political ties with the U.S. government in December 2017 in response to Trump’s announcement that the U.S. embassy would be relocated to Jerusalem.

Are “Hundred Years of Conflict and Suffering” at Risk?

In addition, Abbas had previously called for a stop in security coordination with Israel. However, similar threats had not been implemented in the past. In particular, security cooperation with Israel continued de facto.

In Cairo, the Arab League debated the US in an emergency session controversial Middle East plan by US President Donald Trump, Abbas successfully campaigned for support for his position at the meeting: the Arab League spoke out against the plan.

This leads to a status in which there are two different classes of citizens, said the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abul Gheit. The Palestinians would be second class citizens. The US government’s proposal would bring neither stability nor peace, but would only sow conflict and suffering for another 100 years, said Abul Gheit. He called on Palestinians and Israelis to work together to find a mutually acceptable solution.

US President Trump shared with the Israeli Prime Minister on Tuesday Benjamin Netanyahu presented a plan to solve the decades-long crisis in the Middle East. According to this plan, the Palestinians are to be given their own state, albeit under strict conditions and with substantial concessions to Israel.

Among other things, it is said that Jerusalem should remain the undivided capital of Israel. The capital of an independent Palestinian state should be in East Jerusalem, but to the east of the wall built by Israel – in a suburb. The plan met with an international response, especially from Arab states there was harsh criticism.
