United States of America (US) urges Israel and Palestine to end civilian deaths after mutual air raid action. AS deplores the fall of a number of casualties over the tensions between Israel and Palestine.
“Israel does have the right to defend itself. At the same time, reports of civilian deaths is something that we regret and want to stop,” said US State Department spokesman Ned Price as reported. AFP, Wednesday (12/5/2021).
“We don’t want to see provocation. The provocation we have seen has resulted in regrettable casualties,” he said.
The US calls on all parties to calm down. Israelis and Palestians are asked to reduce tensions and exercise restraint.
“We continue to call for calm, continue to call on all parties to reduce tensions and refrain from their actions,” he said.
At least 30 people including children were killed when Israel attacked the Gaza Strip in response to rocket fire from Hamas. Hamas said the attack was intended to force Israeli troops out of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke about the Israeli and Palestinian crises over the phone with Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, Price said. Blinken spoke with his partners to “condemn the rocket attack and reiterate the important message of de-escalation,” Price said.
The calls came a day after Blinken reinforced a similar message when he met in Washington with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, who urged the preservation of the status quo in Jerusalem.
In Canada, like the United States as Israel’s main ally, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the violence “horrific”.
“There needs to be de-escalation immediately. We need to see an end to violence and attacks,” Trudeau told reporters.
“Rocket attacks from Hamas are completely unacceptable. We are also very concerned about the settlements and displacement of Palestinians,” he added.
