Israel stated that he would oppose Elon Musk’s efforts to provide telecommunications access for aid organizations in Gaza which had experienced communication channels being cut off since last Friday (27/10).
Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi said that the assistance with telecommunications access would actually be used by Hamas for terrorist activities.
Shlomo also encouraged Musk to use Starlink telecommunications assistance as a means of exchange to free Israeli citizens who were being held hostage.
“Maybe Musk is willing to condition that by freeing the babies, sons, daughters and elderly who are being held hostage. Everyone! Then, my office will cut off all ties with Starlink,” Shlomo said in a post on his X account as quoted CNNSunday (29/10).
Previously, Musk provided Starlink telecommunications assistance to Gaza in response to a post by US Democratic Party congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes who said cutting off communications channels in Gaza was “unacceptable.”
“Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza,” Musk wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, citing AFP.
It is known that Starlink is a satellite network in low Earth orbit that can provide internet to remote locations, or areas where communications infrastructure is not functioning properly.
The news about the breakdown of telecommunications lines in Gaza was also conveyed by Unicef Chair Catherine Russel. He was unable to contact Unicef colleagues in Gaza.
“We have lost contact with our colleagues in Gaza. I am very concerned about their safety and the night of horror that cannot be conveyed in words that 1 million children in Gaza experienced,” said Russel on the X platform.
