Israel Offers Two-Month Pause in War with Gaza, Aims for Longest Truce Since War Began

There are sources that inform the website Axios that Israel offered a two-month pause in the war. If they reach an agreement, it will be by far the longest truce since the war began.

Axios refers to two unnamed sources among Israeli authorities.

Over 130 hostages

According to the website, a possible agreement involves releasing all hostages, where women, men over 60 and people who are critically injured will be prioritized. They are then followed by several pools consisting of female soldiers, civilian men under 60 and then male soldiers. There are said to be over 130 hostages still in Gaza.

The proposal has been conveyed to Hamas through Qatari and Egyptian negotiators.

110 of the approximately 240 people captured on October 7 were released in a prisoner exchange at the end of November last year. Nevertheless, there are still around 132 hostages who have not been accounted for.

More than 25,000 Palestinians are said to have been killed in Israeli attacks since 7 October.

– Sounds promising

The experienced foreign journalist Fredrik Græsvik has covered the Israel-Palestine conflict for a number of years, and has, among other things, written a book on the subject. He looks forward to the news from Axio.

– It sounds promising that they want a ceasefire, and that they want to end the hostilities now, says Græsvik to Nettavisen.

However, he does not take the joys in advance, because it is only a matter of a temporary truce.

– It is difficult to imagine that Hamas will agree to that. The hostages are the best card they have against Israel, Græsvik explains.

If all the hostages are released and fighting resumes, Hamas has lost one of its strongest cards.

– I interpret this as Israel sending signals that they are ready to end hostilities. There are limits to how many civilians Israel can kill. The pressure from the US has been strong, and for Joe Biden this has been bad in an election campaign year. Biden is criticized by especially young voters for not doing enough to end the war, says Græsvik to Nettavisen.
