On the last day of the year, Lebanon ends the remaining hours of the year 2023, on a burning field in the south, after Saturday afternoon witnessed an Israeli escalation of air and artillery strikes, accompanied by a new threat issued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which he said “if it expands.” Hezbollah: “In the confrontation, we will strike it with blows that it and Iran will not imagine.”
In conjunction with artillery shelling that targeted a number of border villages, Israeli fighters intensified their raids on the southern towns, especially Bint Jbeil, which witnessed the complete destruction of a house in the Al-Baraka neighborhood. Hezbollah later mourned one of its members who died in the Bint Jbeil raid, called Ali Saad, who was said on social media to be a chemistry professor at Bint Jbeil Public High School.
Kafr Kila also received its share of successive raids, which Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said targeted Hezbollah’s infrastructure, which he accused of using the town’s residents as human shields by making it a platform for launching missiles at Israel.
Ramesh and missiles
Meanwhile, the southern town of Rmeish witnessed widespread confusion, after the parish priest, Father Najeeb Al-Ameel, announced that two rocket launching pads had been found in an olive field between the houses of the town, declaring that the army had worked to dismantle them and had begun its investigations.
The town’s activities, including the Free Patriotic Movement, unanimously denounced what happened and confirmed that they were awaiting the results of the investigation to find out who installed the two missile launchers, declaring their rejection of exposing the lives of the defenseless residents to the danger of Israeli bombing.
Gaza: a new truce?
Regionally, the war on Gaza entered its thirteenth week, while the Israeli army intensified its attacks on the besieged Strip, as the death toll rose since October 7 to 21,672.
On Saturday evening, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said that the War Council gave Mossad chief David Barnea a green light to implement a new prisoner exchange deal with Hamas under the recent Qatari initiative.
According to Channel 11 of the Broadcasting Corporation, the Qatari proposal includes the release of dozens of Israeli detainees in exchange for a ceasefire for several weeks, and the release of Palestinian detainees who have been sentenced to long prison terms.
