“We have already said that this is the next step after the Abraham Accords”
Israel is coordinating with the United States and the Gulf countries a process of normalizing its relations with Saudi Arabia, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid announced on Monday.
“We believe it is possible to start a process of normalization with Saudi Arabia. It is in our interests,” Lapid told Army Radio.
“We have already said that this is the next step after the Abraham accords, to start a long and careful process,” he added, referring to the normalization agreements supported by the United States. in 2020 that Israel has concluded with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco.
“We are working with the United States and the Gulf States on this,” he said.
The Jewish state does not have official diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, but a senior Israeli official reportedly visited there recently for a series of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in terms of security, according to Channel 12.
Last Wednesday, two senior US officials were also in Riyadh for secret talks over an agreement that could lead to normalization of relations between Israel and the kingdom, according to Axios.
“It won’t happen the same way as last time,” insisted Yaïr Lapid, however, adding: “We won’t wake up one morning suddenly and it will be done.”
