The Ministry of Energy is considering not extending the water agreement with Jordan, this is due to anti-Israeli statements heard from senior officials in the kingdom, led by Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi, regarding the war in Gaza, as reported here.
According to the current water agreement, Israel will transfer 100 million cubic meters of water to Jordan each year, instead of 50 million cubic meters of water as stipulated in the peace agreement – and this in exchange for the production of electricity for Israel. Indeed, an agreement was created, among other things, following the great water crisis in the Hashemite Kingdom.
A final decision on the matter has not yet been made, and it depends on the development of relations with Jordan and how the Jordanians will express themselves towards the war in the near future. If the agreement is not extended, it will expire this year.
Among the extreme statements against Israel, one can find things said by Queen Rania and the Jordanian Minister of Defense Ayman al-Safdi.
A-Safadi claimed that “nothing justifies the war in Gaza, that the war is not self-defense but blatant aggression by Israel and Jordan will do everything necessary to prevent the displacement of Palestinians.”
In addition, last November A-Safadi announced the suspension of the water agreement between Israel and Jordan following the war.
