UN: The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has written to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing concern about a new law that could hinder the work of UNRWA, the UN agency tasked with helping Palestinian refugees.
The law approved by the Israeli parliament prevents the UN agency from working in Israel and occupying East Jerusalem and prohibits communication and coordination with the Israeli authorities. This would allow the UN agency to work in Gaza and the West Bank. The ban will take effect in three months. Israel was already dissatisfied with the work of UNRWA.
Israel has accused some of the group’s workers of being involved in the October 7 Hamas attack that started the war in Gaza.
Guterres said the law would have “catastrophic consequences” for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. The UN Secretary General pointed out that there is no other way to provide the necessary support to the Palestinians in the conflict zone.
