US President Joe Biden has assured Israel that the United States’ support for it is unwavering and said the US has helped Israel shoot down almost all drones and missiles.

Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said this morning that Iran fired 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles and more than 120 ballistic missiles at Israel. Israel managed to intercept 99% of the drones and missiles, which Hagari called “a very significant strategic success.” He said an Iranian attack on Israel had been averted.

Hagari said that most of the rockets and drones were intercepted outside Israel’s borders.

Hagari said the rockets hit some places in the country, including an army base in the south, but it was not badly damaged.

Rescuers reported that a seven-year-old girl was injured in a Bedouin town in southern Israel, but police are still investigating the circumstances of the incident.

In Israel, sirens rang out at night and explosions were heard in Jerusalem as air defense systems hit targets above the city.

Israel’s military said most of the missiles were intercepted by the Arrow system, which shoots down ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere, and said strategic partners were involved.

“At my direction, in support of Israel’s defense, the United States military has moved aircraft and anti-missile defense fighters into the region over the past week,” Biden said. “Thanks to this and the outstanding skill of our soldiers, we helped Israel shoot down almost all of the attacking drones and missiles,” he added.

Israel is in a state of alert since the attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus on April 1, in which 16 people, including two Iranian generals, were killed. In this strike, Tehran accuses Israel and threatened a retaliatory strike. The situation further escalated when Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy seized a container ship allegedly linked to Israel in the Persian Gulf on Saturday.

Iran’s allies in the region joined Iran’s attack, and Yemen’s Houthi rebels also launched drones at Israel, private maritime security company Ambrey reported. The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah also announced that it fired rockets at Israeli positions in the Golan Heights.

Iran’s attack against Israel is a very serious escalation of already highly dangerous situation in the Middle East. I strongly condemn Iran’s actions. International community must work towards deescalation and stabilisation of this situation.
