Israel: Hundreds protest Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv

Hundreds of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv against the policies of right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Because of the corona pandemic, the participants kept a safe distance of two meters in the central Rabin Square.

A police spokesman spoke of several hundred participants, while the media spoke of thousands. The demonstrators protested, among other things against the coalition agreement between Netanyahu and his rival Benny Gantz from the center alliance blue-white.

The agreement between Gantz and Netanyahu, which is suspected of corruption and will therefore have to answer in a trial next month, According to the demonstrators, democracy is at risk.

Netanyahu had classified the corruption charges against him as an attempted coup and had repeatedly criticized Israel’s judiciary. Gantz had a coalition with Netanyahu rejected for a long time because of his charges. On Monday, the two also agreed to form a “national emergency government” with a view to the Corona crisis.

In a speech, Karmi Gillon, former head of Shin Bet domestic intelligence, called on Netanyahu to “stop the aggressive smear campaign against the Supreme Court judges,” according to media reports. Should a judge be murdered, Netanyahu will be responsible, Gillon said.

In this context, he recalled the murder of Israel’s former prime minister Yizhak Rabin by a Jewish fanatic in November 1995. Even then he warned Netanyahu, but the latter did not listen to him.

The “Black Flags” movement sees the ongoing rule of Netanyahu as a threat to democracy in the country. They often demonstrate with vehicles on which they attach black flags as a symbol of danger.
