The primary goal of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon is to destroy Hezbollah so that more than 60,000 Israelis can return home safely, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says. But this is not his only goal.
Scores are being settled today dating back to Hezbollah’s founding four decades ago, when Israel invaded Lebanon for another “settling of scores” with the PLO Palestinians, and from the ashes rose Shiite Hezbollah with the blessings of Ayatollah Khomeini from Tehran .
With the current invasion of Lebanon, the war in Gaza, the bombing of Syria and Yemen, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to dismantle the “axis of resistance” that Iran has formed to encircle and “suffocate” Israel.
Does Netanyahu have a golden opportunity on his hands?
Hezbollah is the spearhead of the Tehran regime for the spread of the Islamic Revolution and the emergence of Iran as a regional power. For a number of years, Israel’s political and military establishment – and Netanyahu personally – have weighed in on dealing with Hezbollah, underestimating the capabilities of Hamas, which surprised them a year ago with its deadly raid on southern Israel.
The day after the start of the war in Gaza, the Lebanese Shiite organization escalated the bombing, igniting the northern front. Now, with the Gaza Strip flattened and Hamas disbanded, Netanyahu and many Israelis see themselves as having a golden opportunity to get rid of Hezbollah once and for all (?) while teaching Iran a “hard lesson.”
Iran in a difficult position – The dilemma
If Tehran remains inactive, it will be a confession of weakness, while if it attempts to hit Israel, it risks receiving key blows from the Jewish state and the USA.
The Israeli hostages of Hamas have taken a back seat, Israel’s secret services have regained at least some of the prestige they lost due to the Gaza fiasco, Netanyahu is climbing in the polls. A month before the US presidential election, Netanyahu is “emptying” Biden – and by extension Kamala Harris – betting on a victory for Donald Trump who recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and promises to do even more.
Netanyahu wins on many levels – for now. Because in the Middle East there are no certainties.
