Israel: Hezbollah commander dead – Pressure on Netanyahu on many fronts –

The war in Israel continues, while the government of Benjamin Netanyahu seems to have opened many fronts with the countries of the Middle East. The war began after an attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and since then the killings have not stopped. On the contrary, the situation is escalating with more countries of the Arab world taking sides.

The Israeli military is fighting the growing Iranian-backed armed groups on multiple fronts. He announced that he had neutralized the commander of Hezbollah, Suhail Hussein Husseini, at the organization’s headquarters. According to the statement of the Israeli armed forces, he was killed during a shelling in the Beirut area.

The Israeli prime minister, for his part, in a speech on the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the great conflict in Gaza, promised the continuation of the war. Although Israel has stated that its goal is the extermination of Hamas and the return of the hostages, during the course of the year neither has been achieved.

Hezbollah continues its defense after the assassination of Nasrallah

At the same time, Lebanon’s Hezbollah announced late Monday night, October 7, that it fired rockets at a military base in the Gillot area, near Tel Aviv. She dedicated her attack to the memory of the movement’s leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed at the end of September in an Israeli strike.

The location is home to the largest intelligence service base of the Israeli Armed Forces (IDF), as well as the headquarters of the Mossad, the Times of Israel points out.

According to an IDF update, five rockets were fired from Lebanon. Some were intercepted and others fell into the countryside without causing injuries or significant property damage.

Also, it is worth noting that during yesterday’s anniversary Israel was faced with rocket fire from multiple directions, including five missiles fired from northern Gaza and a surface-to-surface missile fired from Yemen.

At the same time, Israel has launched a new offensive in northern Gaza, while also considering retaliation against Iran.

The US attitude

For its part, the US says it has stopped trying to influence and limit Israeli operations in Lebanon and against Iran rather than stop hostilities, US officials told CNN.

It is recalled that Israel, two weeks earlier, had rejected the American-French proposal for a ceasefire with Lebanon and Hezbollah. Now, the US is no longer actively trying to revive the deal and has given up trying to shape and constrain Israeli operations.

CIA Director William Burns said the risk of an uncontrolled escalation in the Middle East looms as a reality. While at the same time, the US maintains its assessment that neither Iran nor Israel “seeks an all-out conflict”.

Israel must “turn tactical victories in battle into a strategy that secures the people of Israel and their future,” said White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan. The US State Department said there must be a way forward for “rule in Gaza by someone other than Hamas”.

Uncertain continuation from Israel

The Israeli army also announced that it is blocking access for civilians around some towns in the northwest as well, for security reasons.

According to the statement, the closed military zones along the border with Lebanon will include the towns of Shlomi, Ros Hanikra, Hanita, Arab al-Armamse and Adamit.

Many areas of northern Israel have been evacuated due to rockets fired by Hezbollah from Lebanon.

Earlier, however, the army said it was partially easing some restrictions on residents of northern Israel. Educational activities in these areas will be able to continue as long as educational institutions are located next to shelters or other safe rooms.
